Description
Don't want to purchase a throwaway Japanese saw with impluse-hardened teeth? Has Grandad's saw been rusting away in a basement, and you want to keep his legacy alive through your fine woodworking projects? Or . . . do you want to buy a century-old western handsaw or back saw of elegant design on eBay, but don't know how, or simply don't have time to fully restore and sharpen it once you win the saw?   Complete this buy-it-now auction and send your saw to me (or, if your seller agrees, have him send your purchase to me). I’ll retooth, joint, sharpen & set the saw, correct any bows or kinks and polish the sawplate; repair any chips, replace missing horns, polish the sawnuts, and treat the handle with an all-natural and proven antique restorer; then I'll get it back to you ASAP.   Here's the service you're purchasing (pics of saws above not included with this sale; they're used for reference only to reflect the variety of saws I sharpen and restore): Retoothing & Sharpening: Many times, a saw's toothline roams so badly out of joint, that it requires retoothing, and that's why I bundle retoothing in this sale. Retoothing is also necessary if you want to change your TPI and type of tooth cut altogether (i.e. from crosscut to rip or vice versa). I can retooth and sharpen your saw anywhere from 4 1/2 TPI to 16 TPI, rip or crosscut. Unless you specify otherwise, Rip filing gets an 8-degree rake, no fleam and a 5-degree gullet. Crosscut saws get a 15-degree rake, 20-degree fleam, and a 5-degree gullet. If your saw does not require retoothing, I'll refund $10 from this purchase back to you after I inspect the saw and make a judgement call (and don't worry about chiseling; if I don't have to retooth a saw, then so much the better). Bows & Kinks in the Sawplate: The reason so many saws (particularly back saws) have a chip in the handle or a missing horn is because a previous owner has dropped it in the past; this most likely put a kink or bow in the sawplate, because the rib of metal (back) of the saw no longer exerts even pressure across the length of the blade. Acts of careless sawing also promote bows and kinks in the sawplate. Consequently, many old saws present a taper from toe to heel, because to straighten a bow after dropping the saw (and chipping the handle), a previous owner tapped the spine at the toe deeper into the sawplate--an inelegant correction. I can remove the back, judiciously hammer the kink out with my saw anvil, replace the back, even out the blade depth the way Disston (and other manufacturers) originally made the saw, and present you with a restored blade with which to work. Polishing the Sawplate: This is an optional service that some people will want, and others won't. Patina is a controversial subject among tool collectors. Generally speaking, collectors want patina to remain untouched. Those who want to actually use the saw may not want patina--borderline rust, IMHO--to slow the action of the sawplate moving through the wood because of the friction of the patina (or rust). At any rate, I will polish the sawplate on the customer's request as part of this restoration package, and will refrain from doing so if the customer wants to keep the patina. Reparing and Treating the Handle: Chipped horns and rusty metal just looks bad, and impair effective sawing. Cracks adjacent to the sawnuts lead to a wobbly handle. I can replace horns and repair missing wood with my stock of milled apple to bring the appearance of the saw back up to par. On request (in-line with comments in the above paragraph addressing polishing the sawplate), I will also remove the crud that tends to collect in the medallion and return both medallion and sawnuts to their original luster. The pictures attached to this auction site reflect previous work I have performed on saws I have sold on eBay, to include sample kerf widths germane to the way my saws cut A quick note about my saw sharpening and vintage tool restoration business: Bottom line up front: I guarantee you will like the tools I sharpen, restore & sell, and will happily refund your money if you believe the tool or service is not up to the standard I say it is in the item description. Philosophy: I love old tools, and I think patina is an polite and offten overused word for what is essentially rust and neglect. I believe in restoring them to the original owner's and manufacturer's standards of excellence. Henry Disston had an almost fanatical devotion to quality, and his sons kept that standard alive for 80 years after Henry's departure in 1878. I try to bring his and his competitors' old saws back up to the original qualitative intent he ingrained in his manufacturing process; the same goes for other tool industry leaders of Disston's time: North Bros., Goodell Pratt, Millers Falls, Spear & Jackson, Richardson, and the other saw giants. Now that we find ourselves collecting, acquiring and selling these tools on eBay nearly a century later, what I try to bring to the table is a very well-fettled tool brought back as close as I can to its original quality. I always provide pictures of the tool in action to convey that they do in fact work the way they're supposed to; the tools you buy from me will be well-restored, and as sharp as I can get them. Shipping & Handling: Your purchase will always be incredibly well-packed. I'm sure you've experienced receiving a poorly packed tool which has sometimes broken in transit. I really dislike the kind of seller who will readily collect your money, then ship the item you paid good money for out in a carelessly packed, haphazard manner. With that in mind, you can always count on receiving the tool you buy from me in the same condition it was in when I dropped it off at the post office. I always get items out promptly--usually one working day after purchase, and never beyond two working days.    Please feel free to contact me at technoprimitive6@technoprimitives.com for further information the tool restoration and sharpening services I market on eBay.   Thanks for stopping by.
