Description
Offered for your consideration is a very nicely restored Disston No. 4 large tenon back saw, with an 18" sawplate just sharpened at 10 TPI rip with a 5 degree gullet to enhance a fine, smooth kerf with minimal set. This is an older Disston of PHILAD'A vintage manufactured between the late 1880's to 1896, and is in wonderful shape for its age. The highly-figured apple handle has a discreetly repaired lower horn, and the clearly defined saw nuts look great. I have just jointed, shaped, beveled, filed and set the teeth, which cut incredibly well. The sawplate has seen few sharpenings, measuring 3 3/4" across the entire toothline, and is now razor-sharp, slicing through the work quickly with a smooth action that remains true to the line. The cutting action of this saw is nothing short of superb, as depicted in the work conducted on a 1 x 6 section of seasoned walnut. The heft and length of this saw stays true to the line for even the finest of cuts. This is exactly the kind of robust tenon saw described by Chris Schwarz's excellent article in the Spring 2008 issue of WoodWorking magazine, 'Understanding Western Saws.' Other great articles describing the role of a large tenon saw such as the one I'm offering may be found at: http://www.woodworking-magazine.com/blog/CategoryView,category,Saws.aspx. This is a quality tenon back saw all around, and I know you will welcome its addition to your fine tool inventory. If you have enjoyed looking at the restored tools in my previous auctions, then I encourage you to look at the other items included in my other auctions, which include the following: All four saws I'm offering will make a wonderful set for the buyer seeking a complete nest of saws for his or her projects. They are well-fettled, sharp and ready to go to work now. A quick note about my saw sharpening and vintage tool restoration business: Bottom line up front: I guarantee you will like the tools I sell, and will happily refund your money if you believe the tool is not up to the standard I say it is in the item description. Philosophy: I love old tools, and I think patina is an polite and offten overused word for what is essentially rust and neglect. I believe in restoring them to the original owner's and manufacturer's standards of excellence. Henry Disston had an almost fanatical devotion to quality, and his sons kept that standard alive for 80 years after Henry's departure in 1878. I try to bring his and his competitors' old saws back up to the original qualitative intent he ingrained in his manufacturing process; the same goes for other tool industry leaders of Disston's time: North Bros., Goodell Pratt, Millers Falls, Spear & Jackson, Richardson, and the other saw giants. Now that we find ourselves collecting, acquiring and selling these tools on eBay nearly a century later, what I try to bring to the table is a very well-fettled tool brought back as close as I can to its original quality. I always provide pictures of the tool in action to convey that they do in fact work the way they're supposed to; the tools you buy from me will be well-restored, and as sharp as I can get them. Shipping & Handling: Your purchase will always be incredibly well-packed. I'm sure you've experienced receiving a poorly packed tool which has sometimes broken in transit. I really dislike the kind of seller who will readily collect your money, then ship the item you paid good money for out in a carelessly packed, haphazard manner. With that in mind, you can always count on receiving the tool you buy from me in the same condition it was in when I dropped it off at the post office. I combine shipping to save buyer's from undue shipping charges, and always get items out promptly--usually one working day after purchase, and never beyond two working days. Please feel free to contact me at technoprimitive6@technoprimitives.com for further information about my tools, what advice I have to offer, and discussion regarding my tool restoration and sharpening services. Thanks for stopping by, and good luck bidding.
