Description
Original cast iron & tin Horse Race mechanical bank made by the J. & E. Stevens Toy Company in Cromwell, Conn. The bank was patented Aug. 15 1871. The bank measures 4 5/8" across the bottom of the base. The top diameter across the uprights is 6 1/2". The height to the top of the uprights is 5 5/16".The bank is in working condition. But, it requires carefully setting the horses & pulling the string at just the right time to get it to work correctly. I fiddled with it 8 or 10 times before I got a good race preformed. But, I am not complaining as it was entertaining. This is the flanged base version which is, in my opinion, the more visually balanced of the two varieties. The example offered has original paint which is in excellent condition on the base plate, the side panels, & the circular strip around the middle of the bank. The upright starting & finishing gates have just small vestiges of the original paint as most of the paint on these uprights is missing. The paint on the uprights was mostly lost many years ago when heat was applied to the top fancy lattice work areas to do some repairs. One area of the original lattice work on the top left side behind the upright about 1 1/2" by 1 3/4" was broken & welded back in.On the right side behind the support an original piece of lattice work 5/8" wide by 2 1/4" long was broken off. This piece apparently was lost as this area was replaced by a blacksmith's attempt to fabricate a replacement in the somewhat rough but quite similar style to the original. The fabricated piece attracts a magnet so apparently it was made of iron or steel. The entire top lattice work circular piece is a complete & total repaint. The repaint is very old & appears to have been done at the time that the two top pieces were repaired. The top paint actually has a very pleasing patina even though none of the top paint is original. Actually, the top paint is done in the totally incorrect color for this bank. The two tin horses & the shafts that they move on were replaced many years ago. The horses are somewhat crude. But, they are fairly similar in shape to the original horses. The horses are somewhat poorly painted. Originally there would have been a paper label with instructions on how to work the bank. This label would have been located on top of the rectangular section on the top front area with the lattice work design. The top iron figure by the coin slot projection has about 75% of his original dark paint. But, his paint is crazed & somewhat dried up. It appears unstable. But, it is stable to the touch. The projecting coin slot on the top deck has only faint signs of the original paint. The precise condition is shown in the photos. So, in combination with our description the condition & the flaws should be clear. We guarantee this item to be original as described.
